Iosif Vissarionovitš Stalin (õige nimega Džugašvili) sündis Venemaa impeeriumis Tiflise provintsis Goris – Nõukogude poliitika-, riigi-, sõjaväe- ja parteitegelane, Venemaa revolutsionäär. NSV Liidu tegelik juht. NLKP Keskkomitee peasekretär (1922-1953). Nõukogude Liidu marssal (1943), Nõukogude Liidu kindralsimo (1945). NSV Liidu kaitse rahvakomissar (alates 19. juulist 1941), NSV Liidu Rahvakomissaride Nõukogu esimees ja NSV Liidu Riikliku Kaitsekomitee esimees. Ta töötas ka järgmistel ametikohtadel: 3. aprillist 1922 kuni 10. veebruarini 1934 - peasekretär, seejärel - üleliidulise bolševike kommunistliku partei keskkomitee sekretär (aastast 1952 - NLKP), 19. detsembrist 1930. pärast seda, kui Vjatšeslav Molotov asus Aleksei Rõkovi asemel NSV Liidu Rahvakomissaride Nõukogu esimehe kohale. 1912. aastal V.I ettepanekul. Lenin arvati RSDLP Keskkomiteesse. Samal ajal valis Joseph Džugašvili endale lõpuks pseudonüümi "Stalin". Oktoobrirevolutsiooni ajal valiti II ülevenemaaline kongress Ülevenemaalise Kesktäitevkomitee ja Rahvakomissaride Nõukogu liikmeks. 1922. aastal valiti ta RKP Keskkomitee pleenumil (b) RKP Keskkomitee Orgbüroo ja Poliitbüroo liikmeks (b), samuti Keskkomitee KK peasekretäriks. RKP (b) (kui Lenin oli NSV Liidu Rahvakomissaride Nõukogu esimees). 1930. aastal, pärast Lenini nõrgenemist ja surma, väljus Stalin lõpuks parteisisesest võitlusest võitjana, saades riigi juhiks. Stalin oli NSV Liidu totalitaarse diktatuuri tegelik rajaja. Aastatel 1928-1929 oli ta uue majanduspoliitika (NEP) kursil industrialiseerimise, kollektiviseerimise ja plaanimajanduse ülesehitamise kursile ülemineku algataja ning kultuurirevolutsiooni poliitika intensiivistaja NSV Liidus.
